I've not been scrapping (or crafting at all) much lately. But, I joined a 52 week challenge over at Scrappin' n Chattin' and I've made seven layouts so far this year. I'll get them all uploaded in another post, but I wanted to share this one. I used a sketch from TPV and will be entered to win an awesome prize!Hopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06283153697623671418noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431106032804069018.post-35081920351966210162010-04-25T12:50:00.004-04:002010-04-25T13:06:33.286-04:00Feeling craftyI've been making quite a few cards and layouts this year. Over on Scrappin-n-Chattin we did a challenge in March where I made a card every day of the month. That was fun and I've got quite a stash of cards to send out now! Yesterday I had time to craft some and made these cards and a layout. I just love the new paper I got from My Mind's Eye and am happy with my creations.

I added this slide show with pictures of the steps and have them written out in detail below the slide show.
<div><embed src="http://widget-03.slide.com/widgets/slideticker.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" quality="high" scale="noscale" salign="l" wmode="transparent" flashvars="cy=gn&il=1&channel=3530822107902142723&site=widget-03.slide.com" style="width:426px;height:320px" name="flashticker" align="middle"></embed><div style="width:426px;text-align:left;"><a href="http://www.slide.com/pivot?cy=gn&at=un&id=3530822107902142723&map=1" target="_blank"><img src="http://widget-03.slide.com/p1/3530822107902142723/gn_t046_v000_s0un_f00/images/xslide1.gif" border="0" ismap="ismap" /></a> <a href="http://www.slide.com/pivot?cy=gn&at=un&id=3530822107902142723&map=2" target="_blank"><img src="http://widget-03.slide.com/p2/3530822107902142723/gn_t046_v000_s0un_f00/images/xslide2.gif" border="0" ismap="ismap" /></a> <a href="http://www.slide.com/pivot?cy=gn&at=un&id=3530822107902142723&map=F" target="_blank"><img src="http://widget-03.slide.com/p4/3530822107902142723/gn_t046_v000_s0un_f00/images/xslide42.gif" border="0" ismap="ismap" /></a></div></div>
1. Gather up your supplies. You'll need glossy CS, a resist ink (I think VersaMark would work, but I've never tried it myself.) You'll also need two or three colors of coordinating inks, a permanent ink, an image and saying stamp and a makeup sponge. This is my tried and true tool- I attempted the Tim Holtz ink pad that goes on my inking tool, but I didn't feel like I had enough control.
2. Begin by randomly stamping your image with the resist ink onto your glossy CS. As a rule, an odd number of stamped images produces a more pleasing composition for the eye to follow.
3. Heat the resist ink for about 15 seconds or let it sit for about 15 minutes to ensure it's dry before going on to the next step.
4. Start staining the CS with your lightest ink. This first layer of color should be applied with firm pressure to ensure a bright resist.
5. Shade to deepen your colors. Blend and keep inking until you're happy with the result.
6. Use your darkest ink to overstamp the images, offsetting the image slightly from those that are in resist. This stamping of the design the second time is called overstamping.
7. Stamp your phrase in permanent ink for a high-contrast last layer.
8. Spray to seal, if you desire. I like Matte finish the best, but it's a personal preference to use glossy. Or, you don't have to seal it at all.
9. Trim your image, mat it and voila! A beauty of a card!
I learned this technique from Nancy Curry and it is featured in her book, "Texture Effects".
I hope you all try this fun and easy technique soon!
Have a creative day,
HopeHopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06283153697623671418noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431106032804069018.post-49910589521811670282009-10-05T17:17:00.003-04:002009-10-05T17:42:42.827-04:00The Beautiful U.P.Mark and I spent last weekend in the UP. We were hoping to see the beautiful fall colors, but all of Michigan is still mostly green...
We still had a great time and I got some beautiful pictures. I especially love the ones of the Crisp Point Lighthouse, the most remote Lighthouse on Lake Superior. (Remote it was too... I thought we were going to end up having to ditch the car and walk there.)
I'm really glad we went and am hoping to go back someday in the summer so we can do more hiking.

I told the kids whatever didn't get done now wasn't getting done and somehow they found the time to go shopping... lol.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">I am ALMOST done getting all my photos organized... just a little bit more to go. I will be so relieved when that's done. I feel like I just cannot scrapbook anything while my pictures are so disorganized. I make my books in chronological order, one for each year, and I can't put them together properly with pictures all over the place. Already I've found several sets of pictures that go in the middle of what I thought was a completed album, so I'll have to scrap those layouts and then take the album apart and put it back together... ugh.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">I did learn a lesson here (something good comes out of every situation, right?)- I will be very diligent with the organization of my photos from now on... I'll label not only what they are, but the month and year. You wouldn't believe how many pictures I had "organized" in envelopes that simply said "Up North"- well... when? Labor Day? Fourth of July? Memorial Day? And without a year, I've been having to look at my kids- haircuts, what swimsuit they had that summer, whether the braces are on or off their teeth, etc. to match them up to the proper year. What a nightmare! </span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">The other thing I MUST do is have a specific place to put doubles. I have spent HOURS going through pictures that I just don't know if they're doubles or the original pictures... so, once again, I have to look through everything- pictures in envelopes, scrapped pages- to see if they truly are doubles. </span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">Anyway, I should have it done by tomorrow- Yay! And I'll be the model of organization from now on! :)</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">So, right now I'm taking a little break from the photo organizing and thought I'd upload some more pictures of what I've been working on lately.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<p align="center">
<span style="font-size:130%;">This is the first stage of the second spread in the altered book I'm woking on.</span></p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpaZ124zC5fu6Su1X-yu93RPx48z1odBzOti5FyeTX1BH0NGrvgRrZekaA5e9EWlSQb-4_7u1cSYqT2QUxcJn51VKSzMQkcEpmQnkxMKC9SkLHUQ01ZAJN_4FhHm_s1FmdCMUYGHY7bHjz/s1600-h/Gwen's+cottage+2008+022.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237399785647189442" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpaZ124zC5fu6Su1X-yu93RPx48z1odBzOti5FyeTX1BH0NGrvgRrZekaA5e9EWlSQb-4_7u1cSYqT2QUxcJn51VKSzMQkcEpmQnkxMKC9SkLHUQ01ZAJN_4FhHm_s1FmdCMUYGHY7bHjz/s320/Gwen's+cottage+2008+022.JPG" border="0" /> <p align="center"></a></p><span style="font-size:130%;">Second stage- and all I've completed so far.

It's been MONTHS since I've posted here. I honestly contemplated just giving it up, but...
We've had so much going on in our lives- some good, unfortunately a lot of bad, but we finally seem to be back on track so I'm hoping to be a little more regular with my blogging here.
First off, I got accepted to nursing school! I start my clinicals on Aug. 25th. I'm very excited, but a little nervous too. I've got 24 hours of actual class time per week and then all the reading and studying. It's going to be an adjustment for all of us- especially since we just found out Mark is going to be moving to the afternoon shift the same day I start classes. There will be some juggling on how to get kids to and from school and the girls are going to have to pick up some evening slack- making dinner, helping Joey with homework, etc. But, it will all work out.
We did a lot of projects around the house over the summer and I've been trying to get all of my photos organized. That's still on-going but I really want to have it completed before I go back to school. I haven't had as much time to create as I would like, but I've done some things and have many projects/pictures I'd like to share. I'll start off with the first spread of an altered book. I've never altered a book before and it has been loads of fun!
</span><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Trish, over at Next Generation Stampers, gave me the inspiration for this book.</span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">For detailed instructions you can visit her at Trish Bee's ArtVenture- the link is on my home page.</span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">This was step 1</span></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBuuwKpdHC7MHXCepnhlJLXLFws8HxYXjtQ7aAIPKE2-C06cLYS2yJjINxk_K_-TABxeE-_aaM4vbSzSVPN1fFKED5gg_BdZQu-LCzn0SZBH_xkFAgGd8mzIOlEnLas3oyvNKhhjLNCTV/s1600-h/091.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235143398421394050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBuuwKpdHC7MHXCepnhlJLXLFws8HxYXjtQ7aAIPKE2-C06cLYS2yJjINxk_K_-TABxeE-_aaM4vbSzSVPN1fFKED5gg_BdZQu-LCzn0SZBH_xkFAgGd8mzIOlEnLas3oyvNKhhjLNCTV/s320/091.JPG" border="0" /></a>

Acrylic paints and an old credit card.
</span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;">Here's what I came up with...
</span>
</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb2lxK08MxFTVPljKfQ1T3G_rMX6T4EDlV7QOS-WqmvsDHYrnI44e_I-UOy2YK8KTlpT4KEbXCnReJLdHdXJXMcmYHvlxlIuRqW4JF_Tt7XFYkwteLaUOeqMN8S7EJgVodZekyOUAraFcZ/s1600-h/rainbow+paint+scraping+favorite.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163205349806603954" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb2lxK08MxFTVPljKfQ1T3G_rMX6T4EDlV7QOS-WqmvsDHYrnI44e_I-UOy2YK8KTlpT4KEbXCnReJLdHdXJXMcmYHvlxlIuRqW4JF_Tt7XFYkwteLaUOeqMN8S7EJgVodZekyOUAraFcZ/s320/rainbow+paint+scraping+favorite.jpg" border="0" /> <p align="center"></a><span style="font-size:130%;">This is Rainbow Paint Scraping.</span></p><p align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">I used four unrelated colors to make all of these. The one above is my favorite. I used Studio 71 tube acrylics in: cadmium yellow, cadmium red, dark ultramarine and primary magenta.</span></p><p align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">You draw lines of each color paint side by side on scrap paper (like you're making a rainbow ink pad) and then put your credit card through it. Paint rainbows on your CS until it's covered.

<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Next was Random Paint Scraping.</span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Same idea, but using three colors (one light, one medium and one dark) from the same family. These were applied directly to the CS in goops- one at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom- and then I scraped and smooshed (technical term- haha) the credit card through it until the CS was covered and I was happy with the results.
I really enjoyed this technique because it was possible to lift some of the paint off to either discard or reapply it to other areas.

<p align="left">
<span style="font-size:130%;">I haven't had much time lately to do much creating and I've missed it. I have two New Year's Resolutions... the first is to create art at least once a week and the second is to use the supplies I already have to do it.</span></p>
<p align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Here's my start...
Inky Fun Stampers technique of the month was "Technicolor Dye Inks".</span></p>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">This is a simple, yet beautiful way to make background papers.</span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Using watercolor paper, I sprayed the paper generously with water. </span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Then using a large, oval sponge that I had cut chunks out of, I inked up the sponge with different colors, sprayed it with water and applied it to my paper.</span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Let it air dry and Viola!</span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Beautiful backgrounds!
I made this one by 'dabbing' the sponge randomly over the paper.</span></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1jQ9fpjXTfM0thGpbTPyOpJzOzGozCyLn9OIfRjVawIiWWpZA-2Olo3Y5uZzOm6txVDgXzvnMLsV1mpGh98tgjJZbdnR6EzGqTtGzkV_m4sZodLC6Slrf3mGHgullIi0LU9dqmyklB82/s1600-h/Technicolor+Dye+Inks-+Blue+(dabbed).jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153133088201725746" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1jQ9fpjXTfM0thGpbTPyOpJzOzGozCyLn9OIfRjVawIiWWpZA-2Olo3Y5uZzOm6txVDgXzvnMLsV1mpGh98tgjJZbdnR6EzGqTtGzkV_m4sZodLC6Slrf3mGHgullIi0LU9dqmyklB82/s320/Technicolor+Dye+Inks-+Blue+(dabbed).jpg" border="0" />
<p align="center"></a><span style="font-size:130%;">For this one, I started in the middle of the paper and then 'streaked' the sponge outwards.</span>

<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">"Next Generation Stampers" list mom started us on a 'Background Journey' for 2008.</span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">The first challenge was to make 'Shining Stones' backgrounds by brayering dye inks onto glossy white cardstock, spraying it with water and then applying a 'paint' of gold Perfect Pearls.</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size:130%;">This is the first one I made and the only one I used a brayer on. </span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">The gold probably shows up best in this scan.</span></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">I can't wait to use this background... I'm thinking an ATC. :0)</span></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY6R_LAO27PVgXIzSdgXR57OIfEVyxL2OorQsmCTq77VSIdnvxWjmcjfmhawSLSIysan0NRAsZQ5etZx4a6dkIv7IE6wltbOVqMabiHeERtZmiz1hecAVHfYRCOQ-hU0tvgIvALs_7_syB/s1600-h/Shining+Stone-+brayered+and+with+thin+gold.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153130257818277666" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY6R_LAO27PVgXIzSdgXR57OIfEVyxL2OorQsmCTq77VSIdnvxWjmcjfmhawSLSIysan0NRAsZQ5etZx4a6dkIv7IE6wltbOVqMabiHeERtZmiz1hecAVHfYRCOQ-hU0tvgIvALs_7_syB/s320/Shining+Stone-+brayered+and+with+thin+gold.jpg" border="0" />
<p align="center"></a></p>
<p align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">The rest of these were made by using a cosmetic sponge to layer the inks on the cardstock. This was just easier for me since I don't have a kaliedoscope inkpad and I really like the look of the 'mixed' inks.
I was using a very thin 'paint' and although they turned out very nicely- the entire surface is shimmery gold- it wasn't quite the look I was hoping to acheive.
</span></p>

<div align="center"></div>
<div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">This pink is BEAUTIFUL.</span></div>

I've never "taken off" all alone before and it was an interesting and rejuvenating trip. Although I missed my family after a few days- and especially on New Year's Eve when they were 850 miles away and we were on the phone- I'm beginning to realize that some alone time may be what we all actually need in order to appreciate those in our lives a little more. I had the opportunity to walk on the beach and spend some time alone and that led to much reflection and contemplation on my life, where I am, and where I'd like to be.</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">Although I took pictures with me, we didn't get any scrapbooking done. However, Karen and I made a LOT of cards.

My son loves to watch Sponge Bob and whenever something is taking a long time, the narrrator will come on and say, "Three hours later" or "Two weeks later"... That's what I thought of when I saw my poor blog and that I haven't added a thing since September.
Well, the homecoming went off fabulously (see pictures)...
My husband was on strike for only six hours and things seem to be okay at least for now...
I finished my classes! Last Thursday, I took my last final exam... yea!!! Now I have a month off and am planning on a LOT of creating and time spent just hanging out with my family.
Oh- and I'll blog too! :)

I haven't had time to do much of anything besides study. So, I haven't had ANY creative time and I'm missing it very much.
I signed up for three swaps on Inky Fun Stampers, so this weekend I'm going to carve out some time to make those cards and I'll share them with you as soon as I get them created!
News on the home-front... Ashley and Shannon both got asked to the Homecoming dance. Ashley already bought her dress, but I still have to take Shannon shopping. The Junior class float is in my garage and coming along nicely. We'll find out tomorrow night at midnight if Mark's union is going on strike. Now that I'm in school and not working, I don't know how we'll manage with no income.
Keep us in your prayers!Hopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06283153697623671418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431106032804069018.post-88171384729108587432007-08-21T20:59:00.001-04:002008-08-22T13:10:56.012-04:00What Kind of Coffee Are YOU?<div align="center">

You're fun, outgoing, and you love to try anything new.
However, you tend to have strong opinions on what you like.
You are a total girly girly at heart - and prefer your coffee with good conversation.
You're the type that seems complex to outsiders, but in reality, you are easy to please</span></td></tr></tbody></table>

<span style="font-size:130%;">I learned how to make the pinwheel embellishment a little while ago and just love to use them~ they are so versatile and a snap to make. Here are the instructions:</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;"></span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">1. Cut or punch a square out of double-sided cardstock or patterned paper. A two or three inch square works well for cards~ use bigger or smaller squares for scrapbook layouts.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">2. Fold the square in half diagonally from corner to corner and crease (I like to use a bone folder to get a nice crisp crease.) Unfold and repeat along the opposite diagonal. You should now have a folded X on the square.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">3. Cut along each of the folds, stopping about 1/4 inch before you get to the center of the square.</span>
<span style="font-size:130%;">4. Take every other point and bring it into the center of the square, holding them down with your finger. When you've gathered all the points, use a stapler or brad to secure them to the center. Then cover the staple with a brad, button or other fun embellishment.</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj558MqOIgH_vDPyQJZqmBSp7VKQnG8yqUAmb1DVX-Nlr6Hn7ynqbFD0ANZRI3hjOSTmQHxqeifZwkvDfVic-k0PlBFFds1SFQPgUIgS9m1C8_2vuP46M5AX0A92YxunleRc_6h4XHECuyA/s1600-h/new+cards+020.jpg"><span style="font-size:130%;"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100424759401157474" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj558MqOIgH_vDPyQJZqmBSp7VKQnG8yqUAmb1DVX-Nlr6Hn7ynqbFD0ANZRI3hjOSTmQHxqeifZwkvDfVic-k0PlBFFds1SFQPgUIgS9m1C8_2vuP46M5AX0A92YxunleRc_6h4XHECuyA/s320/new+cards+020.jpg" border="0" /></span></a> </div></div></div>Hopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06283153697623671418noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431106032804069018.post-20781299438248161742007-08-15T16:45:00.000-04:002008-08-22T13:02:52.097-04:00It's been a busy, card-making week<div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;">I've been very busy this past week making cards and doing a little bit of scrapping. I made all of my Halloween cards today... I'm happy to have them done! I really wanted to get my Christmas cards made before I go back to school, but I only have a week and a half left now... I guess I'll see how productive I can be! </span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;">I also made several cards for Angel Stampers for Soldiers. I usually send a package of cards every month for the soldiers to receive, but this month there was a special request for blank cards that a unit in Afghanistan could use to send to their loved ones. I made birthday, fall and Halloween cards for them. (Their link is on my page if you'd like to help out!)</span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;">Here are some of the cards I made...</span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-size:130%;">Birthday cards</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTA3WkrVyaPwvr_1uLDMDzq89UCxFf8Fr125wUZbzwF61d4W2gmW_3T5F_I1Eb5JtyNz2jFz2yxX-aIxAa7X5lrFGsM38cXg9WtkJCEGsMc-u8Yj0jP8O6B1upb5v1PtX33-LtbxRqtOv8/s1600-h/cards+003.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099035025818008914" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTA3WkrVyaPwvr_1uLDMDzq89UCxFf8Fr125wUZbzwF61d4W2gmW_3T5F_I1Eb5JtyNz2jFz2yxX-aIxAa7X5lrFGsM38cXg9WtkJCEGsMc-u8Yj0jP8O6B1upb5v1PtX33-LtbxRqtOv8/s320/cards+003.jpg" border="0" /></a>

I love the Basic Grey line... and had some small flowers in just the right colors. I made the distressed paper by crinkling up some card stock into a ball and then rubbing my ink pad over the creases. I used Tim Holtz distress ink in Antique Linen. I live in Michigan with my husband, two teen-age daughters, our 8 year old son, a dog, a cat and an aquarium full of fish. I'm also an (almost) full-time nursing student. To say the least, our house is always full of action.</span> </span></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="color:#ffcc99;"><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;">I am a creative person and dabble in various arts from watercolor to altering CD's. My current passions are card making and scrapbooking. I'm also beginning a Teesha Moore-style journal. I'll post some pictures once I really get going on it. Other things I enjoy are reading, gardening, traveling (when I can), exercising and being a ChemoAngel.</span>
